Historical background

BANQUE DE FRANCE

(creation of January 18, 1800)

The Banque de France was created on January 18, 1800 as a partnership limited by shares, with merchants and bankers and with the support of Bonaparte. Its purpose was to restore confidence in the coin to promote economic recovery. It issues notes payable at sight and to bearer in return for the discount on commercial paper in Paris. In 1803, it obtained the exclusive privilege of issuing banknotes. A governor has run it since 1806. Since 1808, it has had branches. It was reorganized in 1936 with a General Assembly and then in 1945, it was nationalized. It has been part of the European System of Central Banks since 1999..
