Commentary

Historical background

BALBIN

(02-04/05/238) Decimus Cælius Balbinus

After the eviction of Gordians in Africa, the Senate appointed two of its members to fight against Maximin, whose descent into Italy found himself stopped at Aquileia, where he was assassinated in April 238. Balbin, great administrator, remained in Rome while Pupien took the direction of military affairs. Despite this effective distribution of roles, Balbin fails to agree with his colleague Pupien. They were first obliged to adopt the last surviving male of the family Gordian (Gordian the Younger), Caesar promoted in February or March. Balbin and Pupien were both murdered, perhaps in late April or early May. The new chronology based on the work of the late A. Chastagnol and irreplaceable introduction to the Augustan History, op. cit., p. 696.
