Obverse description : Buste radié et cuirassé d’Aurélien à droit, drapé sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (B01).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Aurelianus Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Aurélien auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : CONSE-RVAT AVG/ B|-// XXI.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié, nu, le manteau sur les épaules, debout à droite, tenant un globe de la main gauche et une haste renversée de la droite, sur l’Oronte nageant à droite.
Reverse translation : “Conservator Augusti”, (Le Protecteur de l’auguste).

Commentary


Sans argenture. Rubans de type 3. Cuirasse cloutée. Épaulière ornée d’une palme. Ptéryges larges. Petit pan de paludamentum sur l’épaule. Représentation tout à fait inhabituelle du revers. Seulement trois exemplaires dans la base temporaire du RIC et cet exemplaire cité (RIC. Temp. 3166/1).
Unsilvered. Type 3 ribbons. Studded breastplate. Shoulder guard decorated with a palm. Large pteryges. Small panel of paludamentum on the shoulder. Highly unusual representation of the reverse. Only three examples in the temporary RIC database and this example cited (RIC. Temp. 3166/1)

AURELIAN

(07/270-09/275)

Aurelian was born around 207 in Sirmium. After a brilliant military career, he was proclaimed august at Sirmium after the death of Claudius II and remained sole emperor after the suicide of Quintille. He made the painful decision to abandon Dacia in 271, then attacked Zenobia and Vaballath by seizing Palmyra in 272. Then, he undertook the reconquest of the Gallic Empire and defeated Tetricus at Châlons-sur-Marne. He triumphs in Rome and saves the life of his famous prisoners. He was assassinated when he was preparing a campaign against the Sassanids in order to reconquer Mesopotamia..
