Coments on the condition:
Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle sur un flan idéalement centré des deux côtés. Très beau buste de style fin ainsi qu’un joli revers. Patine gris foncé avec des reflets métalliques

Obverse legend : IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG.
Obverse description : Buste radié et cuirassé d’Aurélien à droite, avec l’égide sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (B02).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Aurelianus Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Aurélien auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : PACAT-O-R ORBIS/ -|-// .C.L..
Reverse description : Sol radié et nu marchant à gauche, le manteau flottant sur l'épaule gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un fouet de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Pacator Orbis”, (Le sauveur du monde).

Commentary


Cuirasse cloutée. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Ptéryges larges. Le Docteur Bastien avait répertorié onze exemplaires en 1976. Deux exemplaires sont conservés au Cabinet des médailles de la BnF. Nous avions seulement deux exemplaires dans le trésor de La Venèra et sept dans celui de Gloucester.
Studded breastplate. Type 3 ribbons with rounded ends. Wide pteryges. Doctor Bastien had listed eleven examples in 1976. Two examples are kept in the Cabinet des Médailles of the BnF. We had only two examples in the La Venèra treasure and seven in the Gloucester treasure.

AURELIAN

(07/270-09/275)

Aurelian was born around 207 in Sirmium. After a brilliant military career, he was proclaimed august at Sirmium after the death of Claudius II and remained sole emperor after the suicide of Quintille. He made the painful decision to abandon Dacia in 271, then attacked Zenobia and Vaballath by seizing Palmyra in 272. Then, he undertook the reconquest of the Gallic Empire and defeated Tetricus at Châlons-sur-Marne. He triumphs in Rome and saves the life of his famous prisoners. He was assassinated when he was preparing a campaign against the Sassanids in order to reconquer Mesopotamia..
