Exceptionnelle monnaie frappée sur un flan idéalement centré, les deux côtés sont bien complets. Superbe droit malgré de très fines rayures. La tête est de toute beauté. Au revers, de très jolis détails. Une faiblesse de frappe périphérique de six à neuf heure, et au niveau des pattes du loup. Patine de collection

Obverse description : Tête laurée d’Apollon à gauche, la chevelure stylisée, formée de points, de mèches, une couronne de fougère et une barre.

Reverse description : Cheval bondissant à droite, conduit par un aurige qui tient les rênes ; sous la queue du cheval, restes de la roue du char ; devant la tête du cheval, un astre ; sous le cheval, un loup bondissant à droite ; le tout, entouré d’un cordon perlé.

Commentary

Concernant ces monnaies très spectaculaires, les auteurs du Nouvel Atlas font remarquer que “les emprunts à l’iconographie des statères belges à flan large sont notables, en particulier au droit (barres dans la chevelure)”. Sur cet exemplaire tous les éléments du revers (cheval, aurige et loup) sont bien venus ;la position et le traitement de la tête de l’aurige forcent à voir un lien avec certains bronzes “au personnage courant” ou “à l’archer” attribués aux Bellovaques. Cette monnaie d’or pourrait en être le prototype (?).
Concerning these very spectacular coins, the authors of the New Atlas note that “the borrowings from the iconography of the Belgian staters with a wide flan are notable, in particular on the obverse (bars in the hair)”. On this example all the elements of the reverse (horse, charioteer and wolf) are well received; the position and the treatment of the charioteer's head force us to see a link with certain bronzes “with a running figure” or “with an archer” attributed to the Bellovaci. This gold coin could be the prototype (?)
