Historical background

ASIA MINOR - SELJUQS OF RUM - KILIC ARSLAN IV

(1246-1265)

The Sultanate of Roum or Sultanate of Iconium is a Seljuk sultanate established from 1077 to 1307 in Anatolia following the Battle of Mantzikert. The sultanate was established following an agreement between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk leader Süleyman I Shah. Its name refers to the “Romans” in the sense understood by the Arabs and then the Turks between the 7th and 15th centuries: the former citizens of the Eastern Roman Empire. He is the second son of Kay Khusraw II who died in 1246. Between 1246 and 1248, the sultanate was governed by viziers. In 1248, the sultanate was divided between the three sons of Kay Khusraw II, including Kilic Arslan IV. Between 1461 and 1465, the latter reigns alone but is poisoned during a banquet.
