Commentary

A example was included in the Fécamp treasure, allowing the minting of this very rare series to be placed before 980/983. Françoise Dumas attributes these deniers to the archbishops of Arles Ithier (963-985) or Annon (980-981). Apart from the Fécamp treasure, a few examples were published in 1962 by Henri Rolland (“Small deposit of the 11th century in Cavaillon”, BSFN, February 1962, p. 120); these came from a small monetary deposit (17 deniers and 2 obols) discovered in Cavaillon (Vaucluse) that Henri Rolland thought to be from the 11th century. The Cavaillon Museum acquired 13 deniers. The legend on the obverse is a degeneration of the Latin name STEPHANVS relating to the church of Saint-Étienne in Arles
