Commentary

G. de Loye in his study listed 1,101 examples of coins from Vienne, Lyon, Orange, Narbonne and Nîmes in the large collections in the South-East of France. With twenty-one examples, the Orange workshop only represents less than 2% of the total. Most of the examples illustrated on pages 364-366 often show crude, poorly preserved examples.

Historical background

ARAUSIO - ORANGE - OCTAVIAN and AGRIPPA

(c. 28-27 BC)

Orange, "Colonia Firma Iulia Secundanorum Arausio", was founded in 35 BC by veterans of the "II Legio Gallica", whose emblem is a ram's head on a shield. The latter is found in the center of the reverse of the dupondii attributed to the city.
