Exemplaire sur un flan extrêmement large et épais, parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Beau portrait d’Antonin le Pieux à l’usure régulière. Beau revers équilibré servi par une merveilleuse patine vert olive foncé épaisse et lissée

Obverse description : Buste lauré d’Antonin le Pieux à droite, drapé sur l’épaule gauche (O*21).
Obverse translation : “Antoninus Augustus Pius Pater Patriæ Tribunicia Potestate undecimum”, (Antonin auguste pieux, père de la patrie, revêtu de la onzième puissance tribunitienne).


Reverse legend : ANNO-NA AVG/ S|C// COS IIII.
Reverse description : Annona (l’Annone) drapée, debout à gauche, tenant deux épis de blé au-dessus d’un modius de la main droite, un gouvernail de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Annona Augusti/ Consul quartum”, (L’Annone de l’auguste consul/ pour la quatrième fois).


Poids lourd. Frappé sur un flan de médaillon ? Le type avec pan de paludamentum sur l’épaule visible des deux côtés (O*21) semble beaucoup plus rare. Un seul ruban visible. C’est le deuxième exemplaire signalé. C’est grâce aux travaux encore non publiés de Jean Lacourt que notre connaissance des sesterces des Antonins s’est grandement améliorée.

Antonin was born September 19, 86 at Lanuvium. His family is originally from Gaul (Nîmes). It is a rich senator who married Faustina the former between 110 and 115 and thus entered marriage in Hadrian's family. After the death of Aelius 1 January 138, Hadrian chose Antoninus his successor on February 25 138 in two adjoining her adoptive son, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. Hadrian died on July 10 and Antonin succeeded him. He must first fight to deify Hadrian, enemy of the Senate. In 139, Caesar Marcus Aurelius and Faustina became augusta. His reign was peaceful and happy and symbolizes the "Pax Romana" of the second century. In 148, it commemorates the 900th anniversary with pomp of Rome.
