Historical background

ANDRONIKOS I KOMNENOS

(09/1183-12/09/1185)

Andronicus I succeeded Alexis II Comnenus after the assassination of Mary of Antioch, Manuel I's wife. Andronicus was a cousin of Manuel from the Comnenus family. He had led an adventurous life and came to the empire in his sixties. In August 1185, the Normans seized Thessalonica and the mob massacred Andronicus I on September 12 in Constantinople. The emperor's reign had been short and violent.
