Commentary

It is very rare to find this token without the trace of die breakage across the year on the reverse: this example is therefore a very early strike. Very rare and specific bust, only illustrated by a cast in the Guéant Prieur. In France, the first trading companies were founded at the beginning of the 17th century during the reigns of Henry IV and Louis XIII. Under the leadership of Colbert, the State set up powerful companies to compete with the English or Dutch companies. The East and West India Companies were created in 1664, the Northern Company in 1669, the China Company in 1698, the Guinea Company in 1701, the Western Company in 1717 which then became the East India Company in 1719 with a monopoly on Senegal, the Antilles, Canada and Louisiana. In 1769, free trade was granted and generated an increase in activity, but in 1785, a new East India Company was reconstituted “His Majesty having recognized that competition, useful for other branches of commerce, could only be harmful in this one”
