Historical background

ALSACE - COLMAR - TOWN OF COLMAR - RUDOLF II

(1576-1612)

Colmar, a simple rural town, was endowed from 1220 with an enclosure. In 1226, Emperor Frederick gave it the title of Imperial City. The municipal regulations date from March 15, 1360. From Emperor Ferdinand I (1556-1564) to Leopold I (1658-1705), most coins in Colmar bear the name of the emperor. In 1634, Colmar was invaded for the first time by the French. It was definitively taken by the French in August 1673.
