Commentary

This much rarer signature is found at the end of the issue and our note bears the number 19548. Contrary to what Doctor Kolsky says in his description of these notes, the La Fay signature is not handwritten with the cashiers Chanel and Soyer. It is stamped but with a new stamp, certainly made on a beautiful pen signature, completely different from the stamp used with Poggioli and Bory. We want to see proof of this in the comparison between the signature of this 19548 note and that of the 50 centime note 11752, bearing the Chanel / La Fay signature pair: the two signatures are identical to the patés and slips near, which is impossible for two handwritten signatures

Historical background

DJIBOUTI

The opening of the Suez Canal gave the Gulf of Aden an unequaled strategic importance at the exit from the Red Sea. The English controlled Aden, the French bought Obock in 1862 while Marseille shipowners settled in Tadjoura. In 1884, a French protectorate was passed with the local potentates. The same was done with the Somali chiefs. Colonel Lagarde founded Djibouti in 1888. The capital was transferred in 1891 from Obock to Djibouti. Having colony status in 1894, the region took the name of Côte Française des Somalis in 1896.
