Historical background

VATICAN - PIUS X (Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto)

(4/08/1903 - 20/08/1914)

Born June 2, 1835 in Riese in Veneto (then in Austria-Hungary, now in the province of Treviso, Italy), in a family of modest means, he received the tonsure in 1850 and entered the seminary of Padua. He was ordained a priest in 1858. He became vicar of the parish of Tombolo, before being appointed archpriest of Salzano in 1867, then canon of the cathedral of Treviso in 1875. At the same time, he became spiritual director of the diocesan seminary. In 1884, he was consecrated Bishop of Mantua and then Cardinal-Priest in 1893. When Leo XIII died on July 20, 1903, his most likely successor was his Secretary of State, Cardinal Rampolla. But he was elected on August 4 by fifty votes to ten in Rampolla, and took the name of Pius X. He died on August 20, 1914 in Rome. He was beatified on June 3, 1951 and canonized on May 29, 1954..
