Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle sur un flan ovale et irrégulier, parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Magnifique portrait de Tanit, légèrement stylisé avec une grosse tête. Joli revers, de haut relief, bien venu à la frappe. Magnifique patine grise avec des reflets dorés. Conserve une partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Commentary
Poids lourd. Avec l’intégralité de son argenture superficielle. Monnaie contemporaine du retour d’Hannibal en Afrique avant la bataille de Zama (202 avant J.-C.). L’exemplaire de MONNAIES 47 en état SPL s’est vendu à 880€ sur un maximum à 900€ avec quatre offres.
Historical background
ZEUGITANA - CARTHAGE
(202-146 BC)
Hannibal was defeated at Zama in 202 BC by Scipio Africanus and peace was signed the following year. Hannibal reformed the Carthaginian institutions, but was forced to flee first to Antiochus III, then to Prusias of Bithynia and committed suicide in 183 BC. Carthage had to face the rise of the Numidian kingdom and its king Massinissa. The Third Punic War begins in 149 BC (Cato the Elder ended all his speeches in the Senate with: "Carthage must be destroyed"). Three years later, the city is taken and razed, its population massacred or reduced to slavery.
