Commentary


Monnaie contemporaine du retour d’Hannibal en Afrique avant la bataille de Zama (202 avant J.-C.). L’exemplaire de MONNAIES 47 en état SPL s’est vendu à 880€ sur un maximum à 900€ avec quatre offres.
Ce type aurait été frappé à Carthage ou en Sicile vers la fin de la seconde Guerre Punique (221-202 AC.). Les monnaies sont de mauvais billon et ont été certainement frappées à un moment de crise sur un étalon réduit.

(202-146 BC)

Hannibal was defeated at Zama in 202 BC by Scipio Africanus and peace was signed the following year. Hannibal the Carthaginian institutions reform, but was forced to flee first to Antiochus III, then at Prusias of Bithynia and committed suicide in 183 BC Carthage faced with the rise of Numid and his king Masinissa. The third Punic War began in 149 BC (Cato the Elder ended every speech in the Senate by "Carthage must be destroyed"). Three years later, the city was taken and destroyed, its population massacred or enslaved.
