Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Valentinien III à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A'c) ; diadème perlé et gemmé ; le tout surmonté d’une main tournée à droite, tenant une petite couronne et couronnant l’empereur ; le tout dans une couronne fermée.

Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Placidius Valentinianus Pius Felix Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Placide Valentinien pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse

Reverse legend : VICTOR-IA AVGGG/ */R|V// COMOB.

Reverse description : Valentinien III diadémé, vêtu militairement debout de face, tenant une longue croix de la main droite et une globe nicéphore de la main gauche ; le pied droit posé sur un captif de forme serpentiforme dont seule la tête est visible ; le tout dans une couronne fermée.

Reverse translation : “Victoria Augustorum”, (La Victoire des augustes).

Commentary

Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Diadème composite formé de perles et de cabochons gemmés, terminé par un cabochon gemme rond. Ptéryges fines visibles de chaque côté sous le paludamentum. Fibule d’attache sur le paludamentum. Solidus imitation barbare sur un prototype de l’atelier de Ravenne à la petite main couronnant le buste de l’empereur et à la petite étoile au revers, pour le royaume Wisigoth d’Aquitaine au nom de Valentinien III pour l’atelier de Toulouse ou de Narbonne. Droit et revers sont stylisés avec un écrasement de frappe au centre des sujets. Ce type est normalement donné à Théodoric Ier (418-451) qui trouva la mort en combattant avec les Romains d’Aetius, les troupes hunniques d’Atila ou bien de ses successeurs directs.

VISIGOTHIC KINGDOM - AQUITAINE

(5th-6th century)

The Goths were settled at the mouth of the Vistula in the 1st century AD. They divided into Visigoths (Western Goths) and Ostrogoths (Eastern Goths). On August 9, 378, they crushed the Romans at Adrianople where Valens was killed. Alaric, king of the Visigoths, first besieges Ravenna where Honorius resides and takes Rome in 410. Athaulf, his brother-in-law, succeeds him and marries Galla Placidia, Honorius' sister. Wallia, his brother, founded in 419 the kingdom of the Visigoths of Toulouse which was to last a century. Euric (466-484) adds Spain to his kingdom. Clovis, king of the Franks, crushes Alaric II (484-507) at the battle of Vouillé in 507, destroying the Visigoth kingdom of Toulouse. The Visigoths nevertheless retain Spain and Septimania. The Spanish dynasty will reign until Rodrigue and the invasion of the Arabs in 711. It will take the energy of a Charles Martel, Mayor of the Palace, to stop the Muslims in Poitiers in 732.
