Commentary

In 1945, the Japanese took control of French Indochina for a few months. In early August 1945, following news of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh, launched guerrilla operations against Japanese troops. On August 15, Emperor Hirohito officially announced Japan's surrender, and Japanese troops offered their surrender to the Viet Minh. The French administration was unable to counter the separatists who controlled Hanoi. On September 2, 1945, Vietnam's independence was proclaimed. It was only gradually in 1946 that French troops attempted to gradually retake the country, a prelude to the Indochina War.
