Historical background

VATICAN - Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli)

(1939-1958)

Born in 1876, Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli was elected pope March 2, 1939, just months before the start of the Second World War, and succeeded Pius XI under the name of Pius XII (Pius XII in Latin, Italian Pio XII ). Coming from a family of lawyers attached to the Holy See, and noticed at the age of 25 years by the Secretary of the Secretariat of State (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Vatican), it becomes successively nuncio in Bavaria and then in 1920 in Berlin, and in 1930 Secretary of State. During the 1920s, he prepares a Concordat between the Vatican and Germany but the text is signed only six months after Hitler's arrival at the Chancellery on 20 July 1933. During the Second World War, moderately condemns Hitler's ideology in fear that the Nazis responded by persecuting the faithful and the German clergy. Although he enjoyed during his pontificate and after his death a great popularity, he criticized posthumous which will challenge his action during the World War and its attitude toward the Jews.
