Historical background

VATICAN - Gregory XVI (Albert Bartolomé Cappellari)

(2/02/1831-1/06/1846)

Gregory XVI (1765-1846) was elected after 50 days of conclave. He was Prefect of the Propaganda before his election. Ultra-conservative, he leaned over the Austrians to restore order in his dominions. He fought against the anti-clerical movements in Spain and Portugal and favored the development of faith in the United States. He protected the Uniate Russia.
