Le Sede Vacante est l’expression latine utilisée pour qualifier la période durant laquelle on constate le décès d’un pape et on procède à l’élection de son successeur. Le camerlingue constate le décès, l’annonce, organise la nouvelle succession et gère les affaires courantes. En 1939, le camerlingue de Pie XI est le cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, le futur Pie XII.
