Jean-Paul II se rend dès 1979 dans son pays natal, où 90% de la population est de confession catholique : du 2 au 10 juin 1979, à l'occasion du neuf centième anniversaire du martyr de saint Stanislas, le patron de la Pologne, il y effectue un voyage de dix jours. Il reçoit un accueil enthousiaste de la part des millions de Polonais qui assistent aux célébrations durant son séjour. .
