Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Valens à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A'a) ; diadème perlé.

Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Valens Pius Felix Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Valens pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse

Reverse legend : RESTITV-TOR REIP/ -|-// PLVG.

Reverse description : L'empereur debout de face tourné à droite, vêtu militairement, tenant le labarum de la main droite et un globe nicéphore de la main gauche.

Reverse translation : “Restitutor Rei Publicæ”, (Le restaurateur du bien public).

Commentary

Poids lourd. Rubans de type 3. Le diadème se termine par un bijou, cabochon rond. Les ptéryges sont visibles sous le paludamentum. Fibule d’attache sur l’épaule. Sur notre exemplaire au revers, la hampe du labarum est croisetée. Le labarum est ouvert. À l’exergue, la marque d’atelier peut se développer par : “Prima Lugdunensis” (première officine de Lyon). Nous n’avons pas relevé d’identité de coin pertinente. C’est le douzième exemplaire recensé. Prendra le numéro 15f dans le Supplément III du Bastien.
Heavyweight. Type 3 ribbons. The diadem ends with a jewel, a round cabochon. The pteryges are visible under the paludamentum. Attachment fibula on the shoulder. On our example on the reverse, the shaft of the labarum is crossed. The labarum is open. In the exergue, the mint mark can be expanded by: “Prima Lugdunensis” (first workshop in Lyon). We have not noted any relevant die identity. This is the twelfth example recorded. Will take the number 15f in Supplement III of Bastien
