Commentary

Triens are difficult to identify because the legends are so poorly placed on the obverse. The copy bmv_347046 (acquired from Bourgey in 1956) presented a similar style, with a major nuance on the reverse in the letters in cantonment of the cross. This series includes numerous variants of legend. J. Lafaurie dates them from 585-590, G. Depeyrot from 585-620 and Riogold from 610... In total, fifteen examples have been studied in the Moneta and none present exactly the same legends. None of the Belfort triens seem to have these four letters in cantonment on the reverse and the degenerate legend seems to read VIOTORI-CVTOOAV. This beginning of the legend VIOTORI is only found on a solidus (B. 5046). The letters in cantonment on the reverse remain enigmatic and do not correspond to the triens attributed to Uzès.

(08/13/582-11/22/602)

Maurice succeeded his father-in-law Tiberius II. After great victories over the Sassanids, he suffered many setbacks in the Balkans and could not prevent the installation of the Slavs and Avars.
