Denier sur un petit flan régulier et épais, avec tous les types bien frappés et complets. Patine sombre avec des reliefs un peu plus clairs

Commentary


Ce type appartient à une série bien connue, mais mal étudiée.
Les deux exemplaires 276-277 de Bais ont bien cet avers mais associé à un revers avec SO (S rétrograde) alors que le 278 est comparable à cette monnaie.
Aucune attribution convaincante ne semble avoir été proposée pour ce denier pourtant si caractéristique.
This type belongs to a well-known, but poorly studied, series. The two examples 276-277 of Bais do have this obverse but associated with a reverse with SO (retrograde S) while the 278 is comparable to this coin. No convincing attribution seems to have been proposed for this denarius, which is nevertheless so characteristic.

Many Merovingian coins, badly minted, with very poor or inexplicit epigraphy, cannot be attributed to a particular mint. Too rare coins unfortunately have the same problem. The attributions being based on often old works, a coin unknown at the time will often have difficulty in being attributed, unless it is possible to read the mint or find the name of the mint and compare with its production in the workshops where he minted coins....
