Commentary

This denier is difficult to identify with a short flan and legends outside the flan, but it seems possible to compare it to the denier bmv_329452 which had a very similar obverse (with a C on the cheek) and this same type of cross on the reverse, or even to the bmv_337453 which was also very similar. An interesting detail is that these three deniers are struck on square flans!

Historical background

UNSPECIFIED MINT

(6th - 8th centuries)

Many Merovingian coins, badly minted, with very poor or inexplicit epigraphy, cannot be attributed to a particular mint. Too rare coins unfortunately have the same problem. The attributions being based on often old works, a coin unknown at the time will often have difficulty in being attributed, unless it is possible to read the mint or find the name of the mint and compare with its production in the workshops where he minted coins....
