Historical background

UNIVERSAL EXHIBITION – 1937

(1937)

The last Universal Exhibition in Paris took place in 1937. It was held at the Palais de Chaillot and Tokyo, bringing together 42 nations and more than 11,000 exhibitors. There were 31 million visitors. Vincent Auriol (1884-1966) was Minister of Finance in the Blum ministry 1936-1937 and Minister of Justice in the Chautemps government. He voted against full powers to Pétain in 1940. Under house arrest in 1941, he managed to escape and reach London in October 1943. He was elected the first President of the Fourth Republic from January 16, 1947 to December 22, 1953 and was member of the Constitutional Council from 1958 to 1960. He had been deputy for Muret and rallied the socialists to the Congress of Tours.
