Historical background

UNITED PROVINCES - GUELDERS

(1581-1795)

On January 23, 1579 the five provinces of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland and Friesland, called United Provinces, formed a federal state during the Union of Utrecht. The province of Overijssel joined the five provinces in the same year, that of Groningen in 1594. In July 1581 the deputies of the northern provinces declared Philip II deposed. In 1795 the French instituted the Batavian republic which replaced the United Provinces. The Harderwijk workshop began to operate in 1586 for Gelderland.
