Commentary
L’institut est fondé en 1844 alors que la ville s’appelait Lemberg et faisait partie de la province autrichienne de Galicie. Elle devient néanmoins un haut lieu de la vie universitaire de langue polonaise. En 1918, la ville devient polonaise sous le nom de Lwow suite à l’effondrement des Habsbourg. En 1939, est rattaché à la RSS d’Ukraine. En 1946, les derniers enseignants polonais quittent l’université.
The institute was founded in 1844 when the city was called Lemberg and was part of the Austrian province of Galicia. It nevertheless became a center of Polish-speaking academic life. In 1918, the city became Polish under the name Lwow following the collapse of the Habsburgs. In 1939, it was annexed to the Ukrainian SSR. In 1946, the last Polish teachers left the university.
