Hagia Sophia is a Christian basilica built in the 4th century in Constantinople. In the 6th century, the Byzantine Emperor Justinian ordered its reconstruction and gave it its current appearance. After the capture of the city (renamed Istanbul) in 1453, it was converted into a mosque.
