Commentary

Even if the studies carried out on the gossip of the Turons leave something to be desired, the authors of the Nouvel Atlas only took two copies; that of class I, typical with its little hairy head and the cross on the reverse, and that of class II to which all the other turon gossips are assimilated

Historical background

TURONES (Area of Touraine)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The people of the Turons, settled on the Loire, left their name to Tours and Touraine. They are quoted several times in Caesar's Commentaries. They seem to have grown in importance after the disappearance of the Arverne empire in 121 BC. Like the Pictons, the Turons provided eight thousand men for the relief army which was to release Alesia. Their main oppidum seems to have been placed near the site of Amboise. Caesar (BG. II, 35; VII, 4, 75; VIII, 46).
