Commentary

The representation of a full-length character is quite exceptional on Gallic bronzes, apart from the abundant series with the running character of the Bellovaques! The attribution to the Turons is perhaps not satisfactory, but the distribution area of these bronzes, like so many others attributed to the Carnutes, is located in the south of Touraine...

Historical background

TURONES (Area of Touraine)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The people of the Turons, settled on the Loire, left their name to Tours and Touraine. They are quoted several times in Caesar's Commentaries. They seem to have grown in importance after the disappearance of the Arverne empire in 121 BC. Like the Pictons, the Turons provided eight thousand men for the relief army which was to release Alesia. Their main oppidum seems to have been placed near the site of Amboise. Caesar (BG. II, 35; VII, 4, 75; VIII, 46).
