Commentary

The Mejba Revolt (1864–1865) was a rebellion in Tunisia against the doubling of an unpopular poll tax (the mejba) imposed on its subjects by Sadok Bey. The most widespread revolt against the rule of the Husainid Beys of Tunis, it saw uprisings across the country and nearly provoked military intervention by Britain and France. The revolt was suppressed with great brutality, and the government fell deeper and deeper into debt to foreign creditors, supported by European governments, until it was finally unable to resist the French occupation in 1881. Muhammad III al-Sadiq Bey created on 4 Hijjah AH1281 (April 29, 1865) a medal for those who participated in the suppression of the Arab uprising, led by Ali ben Gdahoum, in 1864. The medal was gold for officers and silver for enlisted men. It measured 31 mm in diameter and was pierced for the suspension ring, while the officers' medal had a gold knot of three loops surmounting the medal. The ribbon would be green with two red stripes on either side.

Historical background

TUNISIA - FRENCH PROTECTORATE - ALI BEY

(AH 1299-1320/1882-1902)

Tunisia was placed under French protectorate in 1881 under Mahomet El Sadok Bey (1859-1882) following the signing of the Treaty of Bardo. In 1882, Ali III Bey succeeded his brother as Bey of Tunis. In 1881, he ratified the conventions of Marsa by which he renounced his powers for the benefit of France while retaining his nominal authority. The army and all the administrations are now directed by the colonial power.
