TUNISIA - MUHAMMAD III AS-SADIQ BEY
(1859-1881-1882)
Mohammed el-Sadik Bey (1813-1882) succeeded his elder brother, Mohammed II Bey, in 1855. He is better known in the West as Sadok Bey. In 1857, he promulgated a constitution, opened the country to Europeans, and modernized it. Major public works projects required loans from European powers, but Tunisia struggled to repay this debt. Foreign pressure intensified. In 1881, a border incident with French Algeria served as a pretext for an invasion by French troops, who crossed the border and also landed at Bizerte. Tunis was occupied. The Bey was forced to sign the Treaty of Bardo, which established the French Protectorate of Tunisia..
