Historical background

TUNISIA - FRENCH PROTECTORATE - ALI BEY

(AH 1299-1320/1882-1902)

Tunisia was placed under French protectorate in 1881 under Mahomet El Sadok Bey (1859-1882) following the signing of the Treaty of Bardo. In 1882, Ali III Bey succeeded his brother as Bey of Tunis. In 1881, he ratified the conventions of Marsa by which he renounced his powers for the benefit of France while retaining his nominal authority. The army and all the administrations are now directed by the colonial power.
