Alexandre Emmanuel François Janson de Sailly (1785-1829), un riche avocat parisien, ayant découvert que son épouse (Marie-Jeanne Joséphine Berryer, de la famille d’illustres magistrats) entretenait une relation extraconjugale, déshérita la fautive et légua sa fortune à l’État afin que celui-ci achète un terrain, et construise un institut pour jeunes garçons.
Durant la Première Guerre mondiale le lycée fut transformé en hôpital. Il disposait de nombreux dortoirs et de salles d’opération, principalement pour les officiers..

During the First World War the high school was transformed into a hospital. It had numerous dormitories and operating rooms, mainly for officers.
