Historical background

TREVIRI (Area of Trier)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Treveri were a very important tribe of Belgian Gaul who controlled both banks of the Moselle. Their neighbors were the Atuatuci, the Eburones, the Remes and the Mediomatrics. Their main oppidum was in Titelberg (Luxembourg). Their capital was Trier which was refounded by Augustus as Colonia Augusta Treverorum. This tribe is often cited by Caesar. The Treveri took part in the War in particular in 54, during the revolt of Ambiorix in order to cut the lines of Caesar after having massacred the troops of Sabinus and Cotta. The Treveri do not seem to have sent relief troops in 52 BC Caesar (BG. I, 37; II, 24; III, 11; IV, 6, 10; V, 2-4, 24, 47 , 53, 55, 58; VII, 63; VIII, 25, 45, 52). Kruta: 41, 89, 277, 348.
