Commentary

Copy No. 6827 of the BN is used as an illustration, both in the articles of J.-B. Colbert-de-Beaulieu and more recently in the Nouvel Atlas or the Cahier Ernest Babelon on Gallic Gold. The copy offered here is on a wide flan and clearly shows the network of beaded cord around the head of the obverse. On the reverse, the reclining figure seems to have a raised arm as a wing.

Historical background

HOARD OF TAYAC - GIRONDE

This hoard was discovered at Tayac, in the Gironde department, in November 1893. It consisted of torques broken in two, a spirally wound gold wire, 73 small ingots described as coin blanks (weighing 7.60 grams), gold ingots (of various shapes and weights), but most importantly, 325 staters. Unfortunately, \"as many pieces have been melted down,\" it is difficult to provide a precise composition and distribution. \"The Bordeaux Museum acquired, in addition to the torques, two small ingots, two unstruck coins, two coins struck on one side only, ten Arvernian coins, and one Bellovaci coin.\" A. Blanchet, who describes this find on pages 561 and 562 of his Treatise, was able to examine some coins from this find that Messrs. Rollin and Feuardent had in their hands....
