Ce denier est frappé sur un petit flan rond mais un peu court. Patine grise, avec les reliefs plus clairs. Un léger plat de frappe est à signaler, localisé au droit comme au revers

Commentary

Si le pentalpha est traditionnellement classé à la Touraine, il y est associé a un gros globule dans un grènetis. Cet exemplaire avec un pentalpha présente un revers différent, plutôt utilisé à Chalons-sur-Saône ! S’agit-il d’un “hybride” frappé avec deux coins destinés à deux ateliers différents ? Ou plus vraisemblablement d’un nouveau type de denier, qui reste à attribuer ?.
While the pentalpha is traditionally classified in Touraine, it is associated there with a large globule in a grain pattern. This example with a pentalpha has a different reverse, more commonly used in Chalons-sur-Saône! Is this a “hybrid” struck with two dies intended for two different workshops? Or more likely a new type of denarius, which remains to be attributed?
