Historical background

TIBERIUS and LIVIA

(14-29)

Tiberius is the eldest son of Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia. Livia Drusilla was the daughter of Livius Drusus Claudianus and Alifida. She was born on January 30, 58 BC. At sixteen, she married Tiberius Claudius Nero, with whom she had two sons, Tiberius and Nero Drusus. She divorced her husband in 39 BC when she was pregnant with her second child to marry Octave, the future Augustus. Married for fifty-two years, the emperor predeceased her on August 19, 14. Livia survived him fifteen years and died in 29 at the age of 87. Suetonius depicts her as cheating and upstart having done everything to secure the throne for her son Tiberius..
