Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle sur un flan large parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Portrait d’Alexandre légèrement stylisé de haut relief avec un plat sur la corne. Revers fantastique où tous les détails sont visibles. Jolie patine de collection. Conserve l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Tête imberbe d'Alexandre le Grand sous les traits de Zeus-Ammon, cornu et diadémé à droite.

Reverse description : Athéna nicéphore assise à gauche sur un trône, tenant un petite Niké de la main droite qui couronne le nom de Lysimaque et le coude gauche reposant sur un bouclier orné d'un masque de lion ; dans le champ à gauche, un monogramme, un autre sur le trône ; un trident tourné à gauche à l’exergue orné de petits dauphins.
Reverse legend : BASILEWS/ LUSIMCOU/ DIO/ TO.
Reverse translation : (du roi Lysimaque).

Commentary


Très légèrement tréflé (trace de double frappe) au droit sur le visage d’Alexandre le Grand. Frappe posthume de cité. Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire du British Museum (F. de Callataÿ, HGM., p. 141, pl. XXXVII, D4-R1a). Ces statères frappés dans les ateliers de la Mer Noire sont parfois donnés à Mithridate VI du Pont (120-63 avant J.-C.) et auraient été fabriqués au tournant du Ier siècle avant J.-C. par les cités avec l’accord tacite du souverain pontique.

THRACE - TOMIS

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The city was founded at an unknown date by the Dacians. The Greeks renamed it Tomis in the 5th century BC. The city experienced a great period of prosperity between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC. Ovid, the famous Latin poet, was exiled there in 8 AD. -C. and died there in 17.
