THRACE - TOMIS

(2nd century AD)

The city was founded at an unknown date by the Dacians. The Greeks renamed it Tomis in the 5th century BC. The city experienced a great period of prosperity between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC. Ovid, the famous Latin poet, was exiled there in 8 AD. BC and died there in 17. Imperial coinage began under Augustus and ended under Philip II.
