Historical background

THRACE - THRACIAN KINGDOM - SEUTHES III

(c. 325-313 BC)

Seuthès III seems to have been the brother of Cotys. He is mentioned in an inscription which establishes an alliance between Athens and this character in 331 BC. King of part of Thrace, he seems to have been a tributary of the kingdom of Macedonia at the time of Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). After the death in 325 BC of Zopyrion, governor of Thrace against the Getae, Seuthes III seems to have revolted against the Macedonian yoke. It was Antipater who forced him to submit. He seems to have repeated it in 323 BC after the death of the conqueror, this time fighting against Lysimachus, the new governor of Thrace. Seuthès submitted again, which did not prevent him from revolting again around 313 BC and joining forces with Antigone le Borgne against his powerful neighbour. Defeated by Lysimachus, he then seems to disappear from the political scene.
