Historical background

Thrace - ISTROS

(Fourth century BC)

Istros, Milesian colony, located equidistant from Callatis and mouths of the Danube, is in Lower Moesia. The Greek name was given its Latin name to the Danube (Danuvius). The two juvenile heads, comparable to the Dioscuri (Gemini), represent the mouths of the Danube (Ister).
