Historical background

Thrace - CHERCHONÈSE THRACE - CHERRONESOS

(Fourth century BC)

Cherronesos seems to have been located at the entrance of the Propontis on the isthmus of Cherchonèse Thrace. It seems that this region can be identified with the city of Cardia and its Perea. Cardia important city was founded by Milesian colonists. The city was finally destroyed by Lysimachus in 309 BC and rebuilt under the name Lysimacheia. The city controlled the trade transiting in the region between the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea.
