THESSALY - SKOTOUSSA

(5th century BC)

Scotussa, near the source of the Onchestos River, was located equidistant between Crannon, Pherai and Pharsale. The city was said to have hosted the oracle of Zeus before he took up residence in Dodona (Strabo, VII, 7-12). In 394 BC with the other Thessalian cities, it opposed Sparta and Agesilaus. It was in the territory of Scotussa that the battle of Cynoscephalus took place in 197 BC, which opposed the Romans of Flaminius to the Macedonians of Philip V..
