Historical background

THESSALY - MAGNETES

(196-146 BC)

The Magnetes, were part of Thessaly and occupied the peninsula of Magnesia with Demetrias as their capital. The Magnetes gained their independence after the defeat of Philip V of Macedon at Cynoscephales in 197 BC and the proclamation of Greek freedom at Corinth by Flaminius the following year. The confederal assembly met at Demetrias where the Magnetarchs sat.
