Historical background

THESSALIE - LEAGUE Thessalian

(196-146 BC)

Thessaly was an agricultural area and farmed with large wilderness. It was famous for its horses and riders. Coinage of the Confederation was made in the most important city of Thessaly, Larissa, name that comes from the daughter of Pelasgos. The city was built on the banks of Peneios. In 197, the general Flaminius won a great victory on Cynoscephalae Philip V of Macedon, who had supported Hannibal and Carthage in the Second Punic War (221-202 BC). For the first time since Philip II, freedom of the Greeks was proclaimed in 196 at Corinth during the Isthmian Games. Many leagues then formed. Thessalian League was one of the most powerful. In 146 BC, it was dissolved and integrated Thessaly in the new province of Macedonia.
