Historical background

THAILAND - RAMA V (Chulalongkorn)

(1869-1910)

Thailand or Siam escaped colonization in the 19th century because of the rivalries between the French and the English. Chulalongkorn or Rama V (1853-1910) however had to give up the left bank of the Mekong in favor of France. Rama V reformed his country by abolishing slavery and reorganizing the administration, justice and the army.
