Historical background

SYRIA - THIRD REPUBLIC

Organized into a "Greater Lebanon", the protectorate is composed of four provinces: sandjaks Damascus and Aleppo, the Alawite State (1920), the State of Jabal Druze (1921) and the Sanjak of Alexandretta (in north) populated by Turks. In 1923, General Gouraud creates Syrian Federation grouping Damascus, Aleppo and the Alawite State, without the Jebel Druze, or Alexandretta. Knowing the end of the near term, Turkey refused in 1936 the Turkish minority Sanjak of Alexandretta passes under Syrian authority. Turkey to spare in case of war with Germany and protect its interests in the region, France ceded the Sanjak of Alexandretta, which became the province of Hatay. Always attached to France, Syria came under control of the Vichy government in June 1940.
